Give each intent a home, then give each home an ad that makes sense.
1. Themed groups find shared language
Themed mode normalizes punctuation and casing, counts recurring modifiers, and assigns each keyword to its strongest shared theme. Terms that do not share a meaningful token land in Misc instead of being forced into a weak group.
2. SKAG mode gives you maximum control
SKAG mode creates one ad group per keyword. Keep all selected match types together, or split them into separate ad groups when your campaign structure needs that level of control.
3. A useful group is united by intent
A group is not good because it is large. It is good when one ad message could honestly speak to every term inside it. Use the preview to spot mixed intent before importing.
How to group keywords for Google Ads
Start by sorting search terms into themes such as service, product, or location, then separate terms with different intent so each ad group can use a relevant ad and landing page. Paste one keyword per line above and preview the themed groups before exporting the CSV. Compare the results against your search terms and split any group where one ad message would not fit every keyword. SKAGs put each keyword in its own group for individual control, while themed groups are usually easier to maintain as a list grows. Single-keyword groups can still be useful for a high-value term that needs its own ad or landing page, but they are not a requirement for every term. For more on choosing and refining terms, read the Google Ads keywords guide.
Keyword grouper software: free vs paid
Free in-browser tools like this one let you group a pasted list and export it without buying a software suite. Keyword Grouper Pro and WordStream's free keyword grouper are other options worth comparing; check their current features and limits for your workflow. Paid keyword research and management suites may offer additional data, integrations, and ongoing account workflows, while a free grouper is useful when you already have a list to organize. Grouping does not replace reviewing actual search terms: use the negative keyword generator to build exclusions for irrelevant traffic.

Keyword grouper FAQs
What is keyword grouping?
Keyword grouping organizes closely related search terms into focused ad groups, so each group can receive relevant ads and landing pages. This tool finds shared modifiers in your list and gives every keyword a sensible home.
SKAGs vs themed groups: which should I use?
SKAG mode gives every keyword its own ad group for maximum control. Themed groups are easier to manage at scale and collect terms that share an intent or modifier. Start with themed groups when your list is large; use SKAGs for tightly controlled, high-value terms.
How many keywords should be in an ad group?
There is no universal target. An ad group should be small enough that one ad message is genuinely relevant to every keyword inside it. Review the sample keywords and split a group when its intent starts to diverge.
How do I import the CSV into Google Ads Editor?
Download the CSV, open Google Ads Editor, choose Account > Import > From file, map the Campaign, Ad Group, Keyword, and Criterion Type columns if prompted, then review and post the changes.
Is this keyword grouper really free?
Yes. This keyword grouper is a free tool you can use without signing up. AdTurbo's optional paid Google Ads management product is separate from this tool.
How many keywords can I group at once?
You can group up to 10,000 unique keywords at once. Paste one keyword per line; if you enter more than 10,000, only the first 10,000 unique keywords are included.
